The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in 1998 with an initial sanctioned intake of 60 students. It went up to 90 in the year 2000. Later the strength is reduced to 40 with effect from the year 2008. Most of our students have obtained employment in reputed industries and quite a good percentage of students proceeded abroad for higher education and placement.
At present the department has qualified faculty, all with post graduate degree and a few with Ph.D. Degree. Dr. V.S.R.Murti, a retired Professor from Osmania University has been associated with this department since 2003, first as Visiting Professor, then as Emeritus Fellow (AICTE) and from January 2006 as Professor and Director Administration. During his 2 plus years of service as Professor in Mechanical Engineering (SVITS), Dr. V.S.R.Murti has guided two Ph.D. projects and presently guiding six more research scholars. In the same period he has published one paper in International Journal, four papers in International Conferences and five papers in National Conferences. He has delivered six invited lectures in sister institutions during the same period.
During the academic year 2006-2007, this department started M.Tech. degree course in
Advanced Manufacturing Systems with a sanctioned intake of 18 students. The institute is encouraging the constituent departments to arrange special lectures from experts for the benefit of students and staff. In this regards this department has also invited several eminent academicians to deliver special lectures. Guest lectures were also invited from industriesThis department organized two workshops for the benefit of teachers of Engineering Colleges. One was on Taguchi Methods in 2002 in collaboration with Arunai Engineering College with Dr.S.Rajesham as organizing secretary and the other on “Prospective areas of research in Mechanical Engineering and related approaches” with Dr.V.S.R.Murti, as organizing secretary and expert resource persons from I.I.T. Madras, Osmania University and other reputed institutes. The excellent work done by our supporting staff in manufacturing furnitures like dual desks, tables, stools etc., in addition to regular maintenance such as mineral water plant, generators are worth mentioning.
The Department is well equipped with laboratories such as Workshop, Production Technology Lab., Thermal Engineering Lab., Heat Transfer Lab., Mechanics of Solids Lab., Hydraulics & Fluid Mechanics Lab., Fuels & Lubricants Lab., Metrology & Machine Tools Lab. and CAD/CAM Lab. With latest equipment such as plastic moulding machines.
